Park Live 2012

“Park Live” was the centrepiece of the Olympic Park ticket holder’s Olympic and Paralympic Games experience. Every day, up to 40,000 came together to cheer on Team GB and Paralympics GB in their search for medals, saw the competitors on stage and met them in the flesh. It brought the Games alive.

Park Live was a two-year project for the team, led by Mike Gibbons as Head of Live Sites, to design and construct a Live Site in the River Lea with two screens each of 132 square metres facing the two banks of the river. The engineering challenge to cope with a river potentially in flood as well as to provide a gold medal experience for the spectators sitting on the grass banks or standing on the paths and bridges was enormous. It required specific design and project delivery teams to manage environment, water, sustainability, conservation and, of course, structural engineering before planning the event itself. Planning permission was a major challenge and the structure received the go-ahead with only twelve weeks to go. All of the items were floated into place and built in the river.

The London 2012 team set up a continuous screened sporting schedule plus athlete interviews supported by sponsor British Airways and also Visa. During the Olympic Games many Team GB competitors visited the Park Live stage including Sir Chris Hoy, Katherine Grainger, Alistair Brownlee, Rebecca Adlington, Nicola Adams, Louis Smith, Zara Phillips, Denise Lewis, Dame Kelly Holmes, Sir Matthew Pinsent. The highlight of many days out were these interviews on Park Live’s big screens with guests such as Jessica Ennis or Ben Ainslie.

And, just to show that it wasn’t all sport, alongside the continuous screening of the competition there were also appearances by Heston Blumenthal; Jamie Cullum; Warhorse ‘Joey’; Olympic, Paralympic and Team GB mascots, pipe bands, swing bands and the Royal Opera House!

That’s what Mike did as part of his London 2012 role. Now we’re ready to help make your plans a resounding success!
